The Header Story from OOo >>

What I desired from OOo?

I am using OOo since long. Quite long as I may put it, since the StarDivision's StarOffice days Approx Year 2000 / 1 / 2. I did many of my important assignments on it and I was quite satisfied with it till now. However the thirst for features were far from over.

I needed to put the header and the footer on the pages. Not for the ordinary page number stuff but I had to put in the chapter title on it. NOT BIG DEAL as you may say. The problem was quite serious when I tried to put in the name of the sub-chapter to it. OOo won't oblige. I created custom style for sub chapters but all in vain. It won't show in the fields.

Turn Arounds

It is not the first time that I tried to put a custom header / footer and got baffeled. I have also tried to do chapter break, restart numbering of pages, reverse numbering of pages for TOC and failed. So I didn't hope for a success.
Finally I got something from the help which did something which solved my purpose, may be for now.

What I did find?

Page styles are a convenience which allows you to create different headers / footers and then you can apply the style onto pages. Quite deceptive though.

Walk Through:
  1. Open Styles and Formatting by F11
  2. Click on the page icon Fourth from left with a small page in a spiral book
  3. Click on the Last icon, for which the tool tip says "New Style from Selection"
  4. Now a dialog appears, Just enter the style's name.
  5. It appears in the list. Now double click it.
  6. The style has got applied.
  7. Now Create a header from insert header and select the style you just created.
  8. The header will be inserted. You can type any header text.
  9. Now select the page part and Let's create another style.
  10. Just give a manual page break and in the page break dialog select default. (None would be selected)
  11. Now a blank page is there ready for customisation. Redo point 3 onwards for a new style.

How did it solve my problem?

You can see this is in no way solves my problem. But I thought of an Idea. All the chapter names will be carrying multiple pages whereis the subchapters will keep on repeating. So I hand written the chapter names with new styles and allowed for entry of subchapter names through chapter name field. Very Crude method
