अर्जुनविषादयोग

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः ।
मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत संजय ॥1-1॥

dhṛitarāśhtra uvācha
dharma-kṣhetre kuru-kṣhetre samavetā yuyutsavaḥ
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāśhchaiva kimakurvata sañjaya

Before the war starts, the blind king Dhritarashtra is asking his specially sighted visionary charioteer Sanjaya. He asked what his own kins and Pandavas are doing in the land of righteousness Kurukshetra.

Note (Takeaway):

  1. His partisan question is quite evident. He did not consider Pandavas as his own even though they respected him a lot as the paternal uncle and king.
  2. Kurukshetra is a special land, the king has revered it as the land of righteousness.
  3. By referring to Yuyutsavah he knew that fight will ensue.
  4. Some believe that the king was blind by his lust for power and with blind love for his sons. He was provided by his godfather Vyasa with a person with divine vision who was also his charioteer Sanjaya who will help him understand the right and wrongs. How far he accepts the good words of Sanjaya remains to be seen.
